VOCABULARY LIST

The following words and definitions should be in students notebooks (in their glossary).  Click to return to the top of the page



  • diatomaceous earth: the skeletal remains of diatoms
  • mixture:  when two or more substances are combined
  • solution: a special mixture formed when one or more materials dissolves in another
  • cubic centimeter (cc): equal to a milliliter; used to measure liquids
  • solvent:  a substance that dissolves a solute to form a solution
  • solute:  a substance that dissolves in a solvent to form a solution
  • evaporate: when a liquid becomes a gas
  • crystal: a solid form of a material that can be identified by it's special shape or pattern 
  • saturated solution: a solution in which a solid has been added until no more will dissolve
  • solubility: the property that substances have of dissolving in solvents
  • concentration: refers to the amount of material dissolved in a volume of liquid.  The more material dissolved in a given amount of liquid the more concentrated the the solution
  • properties: characteristics of an object such as size, color, shape or texture
  • compound: substances that are made up of more than one element
